Description
Commissioned by Sailor Pens in the early 2000’s, this exceptional work of Maki-e art has been in the personal collection of PacificPenWorks nib specialist Michael Masuyama. It provides an exceptional showcase for the display and storage of any pen collection.
Master Maki-e artisan Takashi Sadaike is based in Kanazawa, a traditional center of urushi and Maki-e craft located on the west coast of Japan. Continuing a family tradition of urushi and Maki-e work, he studied extensively in the nearby craft center of Wajima before setting up his own workshop. He has been the recipient of numerous awards and exhibits and is considered a mainstay of the Kanazawa artisan community.
The phoenix is one of the classic motifs in Maki-e, with connotations of peace, stability, and longevity. It is beautifully realized here in gold powder and mother of pearl, and the signature of Takashi Sadaike is found on the inside of the lid.
