Sailor’s Voyage commemorates twenty years of Sailor’s celebrated Ink Blend events, a unique chapter in the company’s long tradition of fountain pen ink making. The story began in 2005 with the introduction of Sailor’s “Ink Blend” events, where enthusiasts could work directly with Sailor’s master ink blender to create an original color specifically for the occasion.
The events became particularly memorable through the work of master blender Mr. Ishimaru, whose distinctive presentation—blending custom inks in a bartender’s uniform using a cocktail shaker—became part of the experience. What began as a novel way for fountain pen enthusiasts to explore color developed into a traveling atelier that introduced Sailor’s approach to ink blending to pen collectors around the world.
Over the following two decades, the tradition was carried forward by Mr. Takahashi, who joined the program in 2019, and then by the next generation of master blenders, Ms. Tetsusashi and Ms. Iwasaki, who joined in 2025. Sailor’s Voyage brings together the work and individual perspectives of all four blenders in a commemorative four-color collection marking this important twenty-year milestone.
Each ink represents a different moment in the journey.
Kanpai (“Cheers”), created by Mr. Ishimaru, looks back on twenty years of shared experiences with a celebratory toast. The color is a deep, sophisticated red, enlivened by subtle touches of pink that emerge within the darker base.
Shukkou (“Departure”), by Mr. Takahashi, represents the beginning of a new journey. Its color recalls the changing appearance of the sea—from the clear, shallow green waters illuminated by morning sunlight to the deeper, more subdued blue-green of the open ocean.
Akatsuki (“Dawn”), created by Ms. Tetsusashi, captures the brief transition between night and morning. It begins as a vibrant blue and gradually develops reddish-purple tones as it dries, with a restrained crimson sheen adding another dimension to the finished writing.
The voyage concludes with Toku no Umi (“Distant Sea”), created by Ms. Iwasaki. Inspired by the experience of looking toward the horizon, the color conveys both tranquility and anticipation. Its serene ocean blue is accompanied by a delicate undercurrent of pink.
The four inks are presented in elegant 20ml bottles, each featuring hand-drawn artwork and lettering created by its respective master blender. Together, the bottles are housed in commemorative packaging bearing the Sailor’s Voyage ship emblem and accompanied by a keepsake leaflet that tells the story behind the collection.
