The Pilot Falcon Black Gold offers a highly affordable introduction to the world of high quality fountain pens. If you have favor 14k semi-soft nibs, this is an excellent writing instrument to have in your regular rotation.

Originally known as the Namiki Falcon Resin Black Gold, this pen created a sensation in the early 2010’s when a customer video using the pen with what we now call the Super-Fine Super-Flex customization went viral on YouTube. Interest has only accelerated since then.

The semi-soft nature of the nibs does make them an excellent choice for our Flex modifications, including that famous Super-Fine Super-Flex customization. These customizations will give you more line-width variation on the page, but will also make the nib less smooth on the page, and will require greater skill on the part of the user.

But for those who want even greater softness and flexibility, the notched Falcon nib available only on the Custom 743, Custom 823, and Custom Heritage 912 series pens offers even greater initial softness, and even more potential for added Flex through our customizations. The notched Falcon nib, it should be noted, is not actually made available on the Metal Falcon or Falcon pens, only on the models mentioned just above.

For those new to fountain pens, it’s important to emphasize that soft does not equal smooth when speaking about nibs. An unmodified soft nib allows you to achieve modest line-width variation on the page by gently varying the pressure you use while writing. But if you want the smoothest possible writing experience, a rigid nib would be a better choice.

For those who do prefer 14k semi-soft nibs, the Pilot Falcon Black Gold is an excellent entry-level writing instrument. The convenient cartridge-converter filling system allows you to use either Pilot brand one-time use ink cartridges, or any bottled fountain pen ink when using the supplied CON-40 converter.
