Description
The Mabie Todd Swan Leverless Golden Mosaic employs the company’s distinctive filling system, activated with a half twist of the barrel end cap. This motion compresses a newly fitted rubber bladder housed inside the barrel, allowing the pen to draw ink efficiently.
Mabie Todd & Co. began in mid-19th century New York producing gold pen nibs, later broadening its craft to complete fountain pens in the 1880s. The firm achieved particular renown in Britain with its Swan line—of which this pen is an example—garnering widespread popularity through the early 20th century before the brand gradually declined after World War II.
Measuring 5.4 inches capped and weighing just 16 grams, the pen is light in the hand, reflecting the writing instruments of its era. The barrel end is stamped with the code L 205/47, marking its production details.
The gold-filled brass pocket clip and cap band show only slight brassing, with the metalwork otherwise preserved in very good condition.
This vintage Swan comes from the personal collection of PacificPenWorks nib specialist John Mottishaw.
