Description
This Loiminchay Snow Limited Edition fountain pen is extraordinary both in concept and execution, embodying the theme of “snow falling on a mountain at night.” Its surface is adorned with hundreds of minute white eggshell fragments, each painstakingly hand-set into deep black urushi lacquer.
Once placed, the lacquer is polished to a flawless sheen, seamlessly integrating the eggshell and creating the shimmering impression of falling snow. The effect is heightened by the translucent jade dragon clip, which glimmers like a shard of ice and completes the pen’s ethereal presence.
Inspected on May 4, 2004, this example is number 7 in a series limited to just 20 pieces worldwide. Despite its substantial weight of 48 grams, the pen feels balanced in the hand, its generous 6 ½-inch length offering ample surface for the intricate mosaic of eggshell fragments.
Functionally, the Snow is a piston-filler fitted with a large #8, 18K two-tone gold nib. The narrow barrel band is engraved “18K” and “7/20 WJ,” denoting both the gold content and its place within the edition.
Loiminchay, founded in New York in the late 1990s, combined Chinese artistic traditions with fine penmaking. Known for limited editions, the brand used urushi lacquer, jade, and intricate inlays. Produced in very small numbers, Loiminchay pens became prized for their fusion of Eastern aesthetics and Western craftsmanship.
Offered here in Mint condition, the pen is accompanied by its complete presentation: the original outer box, elegant inner case, pen kimono, Loiminchay single-pen travel carrier, and full documentation. This remarkable piece comes from the personal collection of John Mottishaw.
