Description
Katsunobu Nishihara was born into a family with a history of Maki-e work in Hiroshima. He studied extensively in the traditional craft center of Wajima before returning to Hiroshima to pen his own workshop.
Nishihara-san’s work has been featured in numerous exhibitions and he is the recipient of multiple award for excellence in Maki-e work. He is also responsible for much of the Maki-e work that has been seen on Sailor fountain pens over the past twenty years, including the noted Creatures of the Deep series and numerous other memorable limited editions.
The Kingfisher is an often portrayed subject in Japanese traditional art. It has connotations of prayer, spiritual power, and the enduring beauty of nature. Nishihara-san’s masterful realization of the motif uses a combination of gold and silver powder, raden, and other precious materials.
Commissioned by Sailor Pens in the early 2000’s, this exceptional work of Maki-e art has been in the personal collection of PacificPenWorks nib specialist Michael Masuyama. It provides an exceptional showcase for the display and storage of any pen collection.
