Description
This Waterman 94 Olive Ripple is very scarce today. Late in the 1920’s, Waterman’s Ideal Pen Company produced unique ripple color hard rubber pens. It was near the end of the rubber pens era, and Waterman’s had just invested heavily in the White Rubber Company of Ravenna, Ohio.
Soon, however, almost all major production of these pens would be in celluloid, and the ripple hard rubber pens were a thing of the past. But though they were considered dated relics by the late 1930’s, they are highly valued and sought after by collectors today.
With its streamlined flat top design and subtle nods to art deco styling in the trim and lever, this is a pen that both evokes its own time while also seeming to nod towards the more minimalist and modernist designs that would arrive in the 1950’s and 60’s.
At 5 1/8” capped, this pen fits nicely in most hands and the rubber surface is a pleasure to hold. The lever-fill system allows the use of any bottled fountain pen ink.
As with any vintage pen, we strongly recommend the use of conventional dye-based fountain pen inks, such as those we offer from manufacturers such as Pelikan, Pilot, Platinum, and Sailor.
This pen is from the private collection of PacificPenWorks nib specialist John Mottishaw.
